What I find particularly difficult are situations in which the father hires an attorney for the minor child which the protective mother is forced to pay for against her wishes. This attorney simply acts to enforce the child’s legal rights independent of the child’s best interests which are supposed to be protected by a GAL. Often children are manipulated by the abuser into going along with the attorney for the minor child, and may initially agree to having one, and then pretty much subsequently the father calls all the shots. This is another way in which abusers have been able to put pressure on protective moms by having someone paid to push an agenda that is not in her child’s best interests and then bankrupting her with legal fees while doing so. I can understand requiring both parents to pay for a GAL, but requiring a mother to pay for a AMC when that mother cannot have a say in what the attorney does and totally disagrees with his actions. This is just a complete travesty.

These GALs are just another part of the broken family court system. The GAL “for” Elsa’s children rarely spoke to his clients or their mother. He never answered their letters to him. His billing records showed that he spent his time with the father. Indeed, during the criminal trial this GAL “for” the children sat with the father and his attorney. He was a major part of the injustice done this mother and her children.
